About Chef Sadao Ono

Chef Sadao Ono brought the tradition of sushi preparation to Winnipeg, Canada when he opened his restaurant, EDOHEI in 1988, the first sushi bar in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Formally trained at Edohei* (Tokyo) Ono arrived in Canada in 1972, coming to Winnipeg in 1975 where he worked at a renowned restaurant. Receiving the highest honour bestowed by a mentor, Ono-san asked for and received permission to use the name Edohei, in order to continue the traditions of Edohei of Tokyo.

A family affair, Ono-san, along with his wife Sachiko, son Makoto and daughter Mari worked hard at Edohei, creating authentic Japanese cuisine. The Ono family took great pride in presenting Japanese cuisine to the Winnipeg community. They used only the freshest of ingredients with seafood from select international markets such as Vancouver, Halifax, New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii. The restaurant proved to be very popular with Winnipeg diners and in the process of operation, Ono-san mentored many assistants who learned literally at his hand. A large number of these assistants opened their own sushi and fusion restaurants over the years, in Winnipeg and elsewhere.

At close of day Saturday, February 25, 2012 after almost 25 years, Edohei Sushi & Japanese Restaurant closed its doors for good with the satisfying knowledge that Edohei has pleased the palates of thousands over the years. The Ono family has taken its rightful place in creating a legacy of fine Japanese dining in Winnipeg.

Onos-sanโ€™s culinary legacy continues now at the Japanese Cultural Centre, 180 McPhillips Street. Chef Ono-sanโ€™s Japanese cuisine and sushi preparation classes, his active direction in our kitchens and involvement with the Centreโ€™s regular Donburi Lunches, Ramen Days, major special events and JCAMโ€™s Japan Pavilion at Folklorama are some of the events that keep his experienced hand immersed in Japanese cuisine.
